Heatstroke is a condition marked by fever and often by unconsciousness, caused by failure of the body’s temperature regulating mechanism when exposed to excessively high temperatures.  Heatstroke is the most severe heat related illness and without emergency care can lead to death. It occurs when your body temperature rises to 104°F or higher.  When your body starts to reach this temperature your kidneys, heart and other muscles throughout the body can become damaged as well.  If you notice anyone starting to experience any of these symptoms seek medical care immediately.

  • Causes of Heatstroke:
    • Exposure to hot environment
    • Strenuous activity
    • Drinking alcohol
    • Becoming dehydrated
  • Heatstroke Risk Factors
    • Age, the strength of the Central Nervous System has a large effect on how well your body can handle heat.  The very young have a underdeveloped Central Nervous System and people over 65 have a deteriorating Central Nervous System which leaves the body susceptible to heat
    • Exertion in hot weather.
    • Sudden exposure to hot weather.
    • Certain health conditions.
  • Symptoms of Heatstroke include:
    • High body temperature, any body temperature 104°F or higher is the main sigh of heat stroke.
    • altered mental state and behavior
    • alteration in sweating
    • Nausea and Vomiting
    • flushed skin
    • Rapid Breathing
    • racing heart rate
    • headache
  • If you notice someone showing any of these symptoms seek emergency help right away.  While waiting for help to arrive:
    • Get person to shade or indoors as quickly as possible
    • remove excess clothing
    • Cool person however necessary
      • Cool Bath
      • Wet towel
      • Heat Stress Safety Product
